HONG KONG, Mar 31, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The Urban Design Conference 2012 – "Urban Design as Public Policy", organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD) was held today at the Langham Place Hotel. Over 200 renowned professionals, scholars and practitioners participated to explore the future of urban design in Hong Kong.

Mrs. Carrie LAM CHENG Yuet Ngor, GBS, JP, Secretary for Development, HKSAR Government, as the Guest of Honor of today, delivered the Opening Keynote Speech. She said, "Urban design is important for urban development, and it is the art of creating and shaping cities, also blends architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning together to make urban areas functional and attractive. The most important thing is, don't design for the city, but design for the people."

Prof. Bernard V. Lim, JP, President, HKIUD said, "the theme of the Conference is "Urban Design as Public Policy". This is to showcase the importance of urban design in planning and realizing cities' strategic vision to enhance both the quality of life of their citizens and their global position. We believe this Conference will be an excellent platform for exchange of experience and ideas in Urban Design."

Dr. Sujata Govada, Vice President (International Relations) and Conference Organizing Committee Chairlady said, "With a city that is constantly transforming itself, and striving to compete with other cities in the region and hold its position internationally, it is important that there is an integrated strategic vision in place for Hong Kong where design becomes part of the planning process, appropriate for a high density, compact vertical city like Hong Kong. In this way, Hong Kong can become a successful urban development model for other developing cities in Asia."

The Conference will continue tomorrow (Apr 1, 2012) with a workshop and two walking tours that are open to public.
